Occupational attainment and mobility
I have studied social mobility with respect to social class and income. Papers include an analysis of social mobility in the United Kingdom, and an examination of how social mobility changed pre- and post-market-transition in Central and Eastern Europe.
meritocracy and discrimination
What do employers look for in potential employees? And do the characteristics that employers desire give those of high socioeconomic background an advantage in the recruitment process? Using data from a content analysis of job advertisements, I examine the extent of employer demand for meritocratic and non-meritocratic characteristics. Using an audit experiment, I test for evidence of class discrimination in the UK labor market.
equality of opportunity and policy
My current book project asks how social scientists should best tackle poverty and inequality. A shorter piece on this theme was recently published in Pathways magazine.
